Question

The circuit in the figure below contains two resistors, R_1 = 2.50k ohm and R_2 = 3.40 k ohm, and two capacitors, C_1 = 1.50 mu F and C_2 = 3.40 mu F, connected to a battery with emf epsilon = 140 V. There are no charge on the capacitors before switch S is closed. Determine the charge on capacitor C_1 as a function of time (in ms), after the switch is closed (Use the following as necessary: t.) q_1 = mu C Determine the charge on capacitor C_2 as a function of time (in ms), after the switch is closed (Use the following as necessary: t.) q_2 = mu C

Explanation / Answer

a)    For capacitor C1    time constant = RC

                                                             = 1.44 * 103 * 1.50 * 10-6

                                                                          = 2.16 msec

     => charge on capacitor ,q1 =   210( 1 - e -t/2.16 )   microC

b)   For capacitor C2    time constant = RC

                                                             = 1.44 * 103 * 3.40 * 10-6

                                                                          = 4.896 msec

     => charge on capacitor ,q2 =   476( 1 - e -t/4.896 )   microC
