PLEASE USE CORRECT UNITS FOR ANSWERS AND SHOW ALL WORK.

A gas cylinder containing oxygen has a volume of 10.30 litres. If the cylinder absolute pressure is 2900 psi at a temperature of 29.00 deg. C what will the absolute pressure be if the temperature is increased to 73.0 deg. C?

A 1400.00 g sample of ice at 0.0 deg. C is heated until it is liquid water at 43.0 deg. C. How much heat energy was added to the sample?

A rectangular piece of aluminum with dimensions 1.50 m by 1.80 m and 2.40 cm thick is heated on one side to 440.0 deg. C. If the other side of the material is at a temperature of 28.0 deg. C, what is the rate of heat transfer through the slab?

Explanation / Answer

using Gay-Lussac's law
This law states that the pressure of a fixed mass of gas at constant volume is directly proportional to its absolute temperature. In other words,
P/T = constant
note : temperatures are in kelvin here , T1 = 29 C = 302.15 K , T2 = 73 c = 346.15 K
P1/T1 = P2/T2
2900/302.15 = P2 / 346.15
P2 = 3318.463 psi = 22.879 x 10^6 pascal
----------------------------
Hfus= 6.01 kJ/mol
first we need to melt the ice.
now to determine the number of moles, we divide the mass by 18.

N = 1400/18
Q = 1400/18 * 6,010 = 467444.44 J

now, In order to increase the temperature of water from 0 to 43 C, we use following equation.

Q = m * Specific heat * T = 1400 * 4.18 * 43 = 251636 J

Total = 467444.44 + 251636 = 719080.44 J
------------------------------
Thermal conductivity of aluminium = 205.0 (W/m K)*

thermal resistance = Rc = L/kA ,
where L = thickness, A = cross sectional area, k = thermal conductivity
Rc = 0.024/ (205*1.5 *1.8 ) = 4.336 x 10^-5

heat flow through slab = q = (440 - 28)/Rc = 9.5 megawatts/s
