Question

Know definitions of- Brownian movement, diffusion, os permeable, test for starch( movement, diffusion, osmosis, dialysis, solution, solvent, selectively and iodine), test for glucose (benedict's). For lodine and starch what color is it if positive, negative? For Ben edict's and glucose-colors if + or-? Know the consequence are 1) isotonic, 2) hypotonic, or 3) hypertonic. When will a red blood cell or plant cell take on water or lose water? Know the results of our dialysis experiment-which chemicals entered and left the bag. What starch? remained in the bag and why didn't it cross the dialysis bag? Consider water, lodide, glucose and How did the chloroplasts of Elodea change appearance when treated with pure water compared to salt water? Spread out compared to clumped together? s for plant an d animal cells that are exposed to external environments that

Explanation / Answer

Brownian movement is the random movement of particles suspended in fliud resulting from collision with fast moving particles. Diffusion is the movement of molecules from high concentration to low concentration. Osmosis is the spontaneous movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from a region of low solute concentration to high concentration against a concentration gradient. Dialysis is the seperation of molecules in solution basing on the rates of diffusion through a semipermeable membrane. Solution is a liquid mixture in which solute is uniformly distributed with in a solvent. Solvent is the liquid that is able to dissolve other substances. Selectively permeabl is the process where certain molecules or ions are passed through it by means of active or passive transport through a membrane. Test for starch:Iodine is used to detect the presence of starch . Iodine was added to a sample source and if it turns blue -black colour( positive), it indicates the presence of starch and in the absence of starch brown colour(negative) of the solution remains. Benedicts test is used to test simple carbohydrates. It is used to test the presence of glucose .To the sample source, benedicts reagent was added and and whole mixture is boiled for 2 min and cooled.development of brickred colour in the tube indicates a positve test and blue colur indicates a negative test.
