1. aristaless-3 [a3] autosomal mutant Drosophila melanogaster flies have no Aristae (antennae) Female flies that are homozygous for this mutation are sterile. Another autosomal mutation, aristapedia [ap] produces flies that have abnormal development of antennae, where they develop into deformed legs. Aristapedia is homozygous lethal. If you were to design a vial such that it contained 1 homozygous purebred wild type [wt] female, 1 heterozygous aristaless-3 and aristapedia mutant male, 1 homozygous aristaless-3 (homozygous wildtype at the other locus) female, and 1 homozygous aristaless-3 male (homozygous wildtype at the other locus), (a) what is the phenotype ratio expected in this vial in the next generation? (b) If you had a vial with a heterozygous aristaless-3 and aristapedia mutant male, and one heterozygous aristaless-3 and aristapedia mutant female, what is the expected phenotype ratio in the vial in the surviving offspring in the next generation? wt 3 Figure 1 af3 versus wt (eft), and ap versus wt (right. Explanation / Answer

ANSWER (a): In the next generation of flies reporduced in the vial, 2 heterozygous aristaless-3 and artistapedia mutant female, 2 wild type male, 2 heterozygous aristaless-3 mutant female and two heterozygous aristaless-3 mutant male would be born. Since the homozygous mutation of aristaless-3 renders the female flies sterile, so the female homozygous aristaless-3 will not further the generation. So the phenotypic ratio is 1:1:1:1 for heterozygous aristaless-3 and artistapedia mutant female, wild type male, heterozygous aristaless-3 mutant female and heterozygous aristaless-3 mutant male.

ANSWER (b): In this vial, the next generation would be either in the ratio of 1:1:1 for heterozygous aristaless-3 and artistapedia mutant female, one wild type male or female, and one heterozygous aristaless-3 and artistapedia mutant male. The homozygousaristaless-3 and artistapedia mutant female or male in this generation having the homozygous mutation artistapedia would prove to be fatal.
