Question

A 15.0-F capacitor and a 50.0-F capacitor are charged by being connected across separate 60.0-V batteries.

(a) Determine the resulting charge on each capacitor. (Give your answer to at least three significant figures.)

(b) The capacitors are then disconnected from their batteries and connected to each other, with each negative plate connected to the other positive plate. What is the final charge of each capacitor?

(c) What is the final potential difference across the 50.0-F capacitor?
V

15.0-F capacitor     mC 50.0-F capacitor     mC

Explanation / Answer

(a) C1 =15 uF, C2 = 50 uF

Q =VC

V =60 V

Q1 = 60*15 = 900uC = 0.9 mC

Q2 = 60*50 = 3000 uC = 3 mC

(b) C1 and C2 are in sereis combination

C =C1*C2/(C1+C2) = 15*50/(15+50) = 11.54 uC

Q = VC =60*11.54 = 692.4 uC

in sereis combination charge is constant

Q1 = 692.4 uC

Q2 = 692.4 uC

(c) V2 = Q2/C2 = 692.4uC/50 uF

V2 =13.85 V
