Question

Please help me figure out which material it is!! I only have one try left and I know it's for sure not: copper, platinum, silver, or manganin!

A cylindrical metal rod is 1.30 m long and 5.50 mm in diameter. The resistance between its two ends (at 20°C) is 1.50 × 10-3 . (a) What is the material? (b) A round disk, 1.50 cm in diameter and 2.00 mm thick, is formed of the same material. What is the resistance between the round faces, assuming that each face is an equipotential surface? 1E-7 How is resistivity related to resistance, cross-sectional area, and length? Did you look at the table of resistivity values?

Explanation / Answer

The electrical resistance of a wire is given by
R = (p * L)/A
where,
R = Resistance of wire = 1.5*10^-3 ohm
p = Ressistivity of wire = ?
L = length of wire = 1.30 m
A = area of cross section = 3.14 * (d/2)^2
where d = diameter of wire = 5.50*10^-3

Substituing Values in above eq,

1.5*10^-3  = (p * 1.3)/(3.14*1/4*( 5.50*10^-3)^2)
p = 2.74 * 10^-8 ohm-m

Material From the Chart reference is , Alluminium
