Question

For questions 9-10, consider a proton and the green dashed lines representing equipotential surfaces.

Question 9: If the proton is initially at rest, which direction will the proton move?

To the right.

To the left.

Either upward or downward.

There is not enough information to tell.

Question 10: If the proton is initially moving to the left with 2.5 eV of kinetic energy, how much kinetic energy will it have when it reaches the 5 V equipotential surface?

0 eV

2.5 eV

5 eV

-2.5 eV

5 V 2.5 V O V

Explanation / Answer

part(1)

given that the particle is proton .

we know that positive particle   moves from high potential to low potential.

in the given condition proton is at 2.5 V. so it will move to low potential 0 V.

So the direction of proton is to the right .

part(b)

initially proton has the KE = 2.5eV

proton needs energy to move to 5V is

KE = KE (at 5V) - KE (at 2.5 V )

KE = 5eV - 2.5 eV = 2.5 eV

the proton will loose energy (2.5 eV) to reach 5 V equipotential surface

so the kinetic energy at 5 V equipotential surface = 0 eV

answer

kinetic energy will proton have when it reaches the 5 V equipotential surface = 0 eV
