Question
Two shuffleboard disks of equal mass, one orange and the other green, are involved in a perfectly elastic glancing collision. The green disk is initially at rest and is struck by the orange disk moving initially to the right at v_oi = 5.60 m/s as in Figure a, shown below. After the collision, the orange disk moves in a direction that makes an angle of theta = 38.0 degree with the horizontal axis while the green disk makes an angle of phi = 52.0 degree with this axis as in Figure determine the speed of each disk after the collision.Explanation / Answer
Let the mass be m
Using Momentum Conservation
Initial momentum = Final Momentum
In X axis,
m* 5.60 = m*vof * cos(38) + m*vgf*cos(52.0)
5.60 = vof * cos(38) + vgf*cos(52.0) --------1
In Yaxis,
0 = m*vof * sin(38) - m*vgf*sin(52.0)
vof * sin(38) = vgf*sin(52.0) ----------2
Using eq 1 & 2.,
vof = 4.41 m/s
vgf = 3.45 m/s
