Question

Tour of the Solar System
Im confused on how to answer #1 & #2 Planet Atmosphere? Atmospheric Pressure Radius Temperature (YorN) Composition (bar) (km) 104 2,440 6,051 6,370 Carbon Dioxide, 0.006 3,390 es 12,40 (oC) 167 Mercury Helium, Oxygen Carbon Dioxide, 91 Venus 462 Sulfuric Acid Nitrogen, Oxygen Earth 15 Mars -55 Nitrogen Explain in your own words why these planets have little or no atmosphere. Can you show an equation that explains why this has happened? 1) The Solar Nebula model of the formation of the Solar System shows that the most abundant gases which were present in this original nebula were Hydrogen and Helium. These are the gases that make up our Sun and the giant planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Why then the small planets that retained an atmosphere have only relatively heavy gases in the atmosphere, such as Nitrogen, Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide, but no Hydrogen and Helium? 2)

Explanation / Answer

Answer 1

Planet have no atmoshphere because they have very less graavitational pull .More is the gravaitational pull, more will it attract gases and so there will be atmoshphere.

g=GM/R^2 where M is mass of planet ,R is radius of planet

Some planet are so small that its gravity is not even strong enough to hold onto the heavy gases like carbon dioxide, that means it has no atmosphere.

answer 2

Small planet have heavy gases because lightweight gases such as hydrogen and helium move faster than medium-weight gases like nitrogen and oxygen. The heavy gases like carbon dioxide move at a slower rate of speed than the other two.So small planet have low gravitational pull and they are not able to attract light gases .
