Question

(a)            The speed of light inside a material is 1.7 x 108 m/s. What is the refractive index

of this material.

            (b)       A light ray traveling in air strikes the surface of a piece of glass of refractive

                        index 1.55, making an angle of 75° with the normal. At what angle it will refract

                        inside the glass.

            (c)        A light ray traveling in water of refractive index 1.33, strikes a piece of glass of

                        refractive index 1.51, making certain angle i with normal. If the angle of

                        refraction is 35°, find the angle of incidence i ?

            (d)       You are passing by a small pool full of a clear liquid. You don’t know if

                        the liquid is water or something else. You checked that the apparent depth of the

                        pool is 4 m. You jumped inside the pool and found that the real depth of the pool

                        is 6 m. What is the index of refraction of the liquid inside the pool? Using table

                        23.1 in the textbook and find what liquid is there in the pool.

Explanation / Answer

( a )

From the definition of refractive index,n

n = c / V

Here, c is speed of light

n = 3 x108 m/s / 1.7 x 108 m/s = 1.764

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Use Snell's law

n1 sin 1 = n2 sin2

( 1 ) sin 75° = ( 1.55 ) sin2

Solve for  2

2 = 38.54o

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Use Snell's law

n1 sin 1 = n2 sin2

( 1.33 ) sin 1 = ( 1.51 ) sin35o

Solve for 1

1 = 40.6o
