Question

1. In the first part of this lab, you will build your own parallel plate capacitor by with two aluminum foil sheets and on or more transparency sheets in between them.

a. If the each aluminum sheet is 10 cm x 10 cm, and a piece of transparency is ~0.1mm thick, what is the capacitance of the 2 foil sheets separated by 1 transparency sheet? Note: pay close attention to the units!

b. If the distance between two sheets is 0.1 mm, what area would they have to be so that the capacitance is 1 F?

c. If the area of each sheet is 10 cm x 10 cm, how close would they have to be so that the capacitance is 1 F? For reference, the diameter of a hydrogen atom is ~10-10 m.

please give me detailed directions thank you!!

Explanation / Answer

Assuming the dielectric of transperancy sheet to be 2 (you may use other value if provided to you)

C = k 0 A/D

where, 0 = 8.854 187 817... × 1012 F. m1

C = 2 * 8.85× 1012 *.01/.0001 = 17.7 * 10-10 F

b) For a capacitance of 1 F

1 = k 0 A/D

A = .0001/2 * 8.85× 1012

A = 5.64 * 10+6 m2

c) 1 = k 0 A/D

D = k 0 A

D = 2 * 8.85× 1012 *.01 = 0.177 1012 m

(This is practically very low seperation)
