Let us know if you got a helpful answer. Question A mass spectrometer, sketched below, is a device used to separate different ions. Such ions with a well-defined velocity vo enter through a slit into a region of uniform magnetic field B, where they follow a semicircular path until they strike the detector slit above the entry slit. The distance between the entry and the detector slit is d = 1.80 m.
1. Chlorine ions of mass 35 amu (1 amu equals 1.66×10-27 kg), carrying a charge of +1e enter the spectrometer with initial speed of vo = 4.80×105 m/s. What value of B is required for these ions to hit the detector?
2. Equally charged chlorine ions of mass 37 amu now enter the spectrometer. How close to the detector slit will they impact?
detector slitExplanation / Answer
1. Fm = Fc
qVB = mv^2/R
B = mv/qR
here R = d/2 = 0.9 m
B = 35*1.66*10^-27*4.80*10^5/(1.6*10^-19*0.9)
B = 0.193 T
2. Since
R = mv/qB
R is proportiona to m, So
R1/R2 = m1/m2
R2 = R1*m2/m1
R2 = 0.9*37/35 = 0.951 m
Also R = d/2, So
d = 2*R
d' = 2*0.951 = 1.902 m
Now
d' - d = 1.902 - 1.8 = 0.102 m
