Question
Assume that x = 1.32 m and y = 1.98 m. What is the speed of the water coming out of the hole?
If the hole has a diameter of 3.17 mm, then what is the height, h, of the water level in the tank?
Explanation / Answer
Since y = 1.98m,
t^2 = 2 y / g
t = sqrt(2 y / g)
t = sqrt(2* 1.98 /9.81 ) 0.635 secs
Velocity V = S/t
V = 1.32/0.635
V = 2.34 m/s
-------------------------------
By Torricelli's law, v = sqrt (2gh)
v^2 = 2 g h
h = 0.5 v^2 / g
h = 0.5 * (2.34^2) / 9.81
h = 0.28 m this is above the hole
Thus water level is h + y
= 0.28 + 1.98
= 2.26 m
