Question
Two objects with masses of m_1 = 6 kg and m_2 = 10 kg are connected by a massless cable as shown below. They are pulled upward by an applied force F. The result is a constant acceleration of 3 m/s^2 upward for the two objects. The tension in the cable connecting m_1 and m_2 is T. Calculate the magnitude of applied force and the tension in the cable. Include the required free body diagrams to solve the problem to carn the full credits. Also specify the free body diagram that you are using to solve problem clearly.Explanation / Answer
Take m1 and m2 as system
Net force = (m1+m2)*a
F - (m1+m2)*g = (m1+m2)*a
F - (6+12)*9.8 = (6+12)*3
F = 230.4 N
take m2 as system
net force = m2*a
T - m2*g = m2*a
T = m2*(g+a)
= 10*(9.8+3)
= 128 N
