Question

Ultrasound can be used to deliver energy to tissues for therapy. It can penetrate tissue to a depth approximately 200 times its wavelength. The speed of sound

What is the approximate depth of penetration of ultrasound at a frequency of 5.2 MHz ? Use values given in table if necessary.

What is the approximate depth of penetration of ultrasound at a frequency of 5.2  ? Use values given in table if necessary.

Medium Speed(m/s) Air (0C) 331 Air (20C) 343 Helium (0C) 970 Ethyl alchohol 1170 Water 1480 Human tissue (ultrasound) 1540 Lead 1200 Aluminum 5100

Explanation / Answer

here,

the speed of sound in air and water is very different.

as you mentioned tissues, and we are mostly water, i will assume the speed of sound is that in water, which is 1480 m/s.

if you are supposed to assume a specific value for this speed in tissue, then just use that number in the prescription below....

so

wavelength * frequency = 1480 m/s

wavelength = 1480 / (5.2 * 10^6)
wavelength = 2.84 * 10^-4 m

penetration depth = 200 times that is 0.059

the depth of penetration is C. 5.9 cm
