Question

(a) A 0.160-kg hockey puck is moving on an icy, frictionless, horizontal surface. At t = 0 the puck is moving to the right at 2.80 m/s.(a) Calculate the velocity of the puck (magnitude and direction) after a force of 30.0 N directed to the right has been applied for 0.050 s.
_________________m/s (After answering, please select one of the following)

______+x direction

______+y direction

______-x direction

______-y direction

(b) If instead, a force of 13.3 N directed to the left is applied from t = 0 to t = 0.050 s, what is the final velocity of the puck?
_____________m/s (After answering, please select one of the following)

______+x direction

______+y direction

______-x direction

______-y direction

Explanation / Answer

The initial velocity is 2.8m/s,

final velocity v to be determind

time during which the force acted is 0.05s.

The force is 30N

The acceleration is a =F/m = 30/0.16 = 187.5m/s2

As we know from equation of motion v=u+at

v= 2.8 + 187.5x0.05 = 12.18m/s in +x direction

b) Now in the force is opposite a= -13.3/0.16 = -83.13m/s2

  we know from equation of motion v=u+at

The final velocity v=2.8-83.13x0.05

v= -1.36m/s

The final velocity is 1.36m/s in - x direction
