Help with Physics 2 hw? ( easy steps will help me understand, thank you)

A research laboratory that specializes in "novel" conducting materials performs tests to acquire thermal data on a new type of composite conductor ; they apply a fixed potential difference of 100 volts across the conductor and measure the current generated at various temperatures. a. In one set of tests, they found that at a temperature of 20degreeC, the current was 4.00 amps but as the temperature rose to 120degreeC, the current decreased by 30% ; what must be the temperature coefficient of resistivity of the material from which this conductor is made? b. What would you expect the current and power dissipation in the conductor to be at a temperature of 220degreeC?

Explanation / Answer

Initial resistance=R=100/4=25 ohm

after increasing temperature

current=4*0.7=2.8 A

now resistance=Rnew=100/2.8=35.714 ohm

let the temperature coefficient be x

Rnew=R(1+x(temperature difference))

35.714=25(1+100x)

x=4.285*10^(-3) K^(-1)
