Question

Could someone please help and give details on how you solve this?

A friction welding machine is butt-welding two steel pipes together. Initially the spinning pipe is rotating against the stationary pipe at a rate of (rounds per minute). 25 seconds later the spinning pipe comes to rest and the molten steel between the two pipes begins to cool. Assuming that the deceleration of the moving pipe was uniform, how many revolutions did the moving pipe make before coming to rest? revolutions (plusminus 0.5 revolutions)

Explanation / Answer

given

wi = 676 rpm

wf = 0

t = 25 s = 25/60 = 0.4167 min

angular ancceleration, alfa = (wf - wi)/t

= (0 - 676)/0.4167

= -1622.4 rev/min^2

let theta is the angular displacemnt.

now apply, theta = wi*t + 0.5*alfa*t^2

= 676*0.4167 + 0.5*(-1622.4)*0.4167^2

= 140.8 revolutions.
