Question
Which of the following statements are true concerning nuclear fission reactions? Check all that apply.
Nuclear fission is the process during which a heavy nucleus splits into two intermediate-sized nuclei after being struck by a neutron.
The mass of the products of a nuclear fission reaction is greater than the mass of the original elements.
Nuclear fission is the process during which small nuclei combine to form a larger one.
The mass of the products of a nuclear fission reaction is less than the mass of the original elements.
Explanation / Answer
the correct answers are
(1)nuclear fission is the process during which a heavy nucleus splits into two intermediate -sized nuclei after being struck by a neutron
(2)the mass of product of nuclear fission reaction is less than the mass of the original elements
so i will explain this pattern
the reaction is used for nuclear fission process
92 U235 + 0 N1 (is convert) 56 Ba 141 + 36 Kr 92 +3(0 n1) +200 Mev
in this reaction when neutron stricks 92 U 235 nucleus ,it is absorbed by it producing a highly unstable 92 U 235 nucleus ,instead of emitting alpha beta & gamma -rays ,this unstable nucleus is splits into two nuclei with intermediate mass viz 56 Ba 141 and 36 Kr 92 during this fission ,three neutrons are given out and a small mass defect occurs which convert the energy
the energy liberated per fission can be calculated as follows
the actual masses before and after the fission reaction are found below
mass of 92U 235 = 235.045733 amu
mass of 0N 1 = 1.008665 amu
total initial mass = 236.054398 amu
mass of 56 Ba 141 =140.9177 amu
mass of 36 Kr 92 =91.8854 amu
mass of 3 neutrons = 3.025995 amu
total final mass =235.829095 amu
decrease of mass =236.054398 - 235.829095
=0.225303 amu
