Question

What does it mean for something to follow sinusodal motion? From my understanding the function sine relates the angle of a right triangle to its sides (opposite/hypotenuse). So does sinusoidal motion mean that the output of a function is related to the input according to the ratio we see in a right triangle (opposite/hypotenuse).

For example, Simple Harmonic motion follows sinusiodal motion were Y=Asin(wt). Does this mean that the Y position ( the output) is a result of the amplitude multipled by the ratio of opposite/hypotenuse. In this case wt would be providing the angle.

Also, why would an object follow sinusiodal motion? Is it because the motion is circular with?

Explanation / Answer

those object or systems which can have periodic motions (An object with a periodic motion is restricted to move between two points) for example pendulums, an object which moves in circles, their motion can be modeled with a periodic function like a sine or cosine because these funtions are periodic.

sine and cosine functions are restricted to move between -1 and 1
