Question
Open-Response Homework Problem 11.4 The wire below carries a current of 7A. We wish to calculate the magnetic field at point P . The figure is drawn to scale and the large blocks are ruled in centimeters. YOU MUST REPORT THE FIELDS AS VECTORS. Note, because the field point is fairly close to the segment, the finite current element approximation may not be a very good approximation to the field.
(a)Calculate the magnetic field due to segment AB at point P using the finite segment approximation.
(b)Calculate the magnetic field due to segment BC at point P using the finite segment approximation.
(c)Calculate the magnetic field due to segment CD at point P using the finite segment approximation.
Explanation / Answer
a) magnetic field due to segment AB at point P = 0 T
b) magnetic field due to segment BC = 10-7 * 7 * cos26.56/0.005
= 1.252 * 10-4 T
c) magnetic field due to segment CD at point P = (10-7) * (7/0.01) * (cos63.44 + cos63.44)
= 6.26 * 10-5 T
=> Net magnetic field at point P = 1.252 * 10-4 + 6.26 * 10-5 + 1.252 * 10-4
= 3.13 * 10-4 T ( Directed out of plane of paper)
