Question

A vertical bar magnet is dropped through the center of a horizontal loop of wire, with its south pole leading. At the moment just before the south pole passes through the loop, what is the direction of the induced current in the loop (viewed from above)? Explain your answer to the previous question. A vertical bar magnet is dropped through the center of a horizontal loop of wire, with its south pole leading. At the moment when the midpoint of the magnet passes through the loop, what is the direction of the induced current in the loop (viewed from above)? Explain your answer to the previous question. One of the excursions last week involved a long wire passing through the field of a large permanent magnet. If, standing in front of the apparatus, you have connected the power supply such that the current flows from left to right, and the wire is pushed toward you, which of the poles of the magnet (top or bottom) is the north pole? Justify your answer.

Explanation / Answer

1) when south pole of bar magnet moving towards the coil,it induce clock wise current.

2) According to Faraday's law, when the magnet is moving towards coil the rate of change of magnetic flux induce emf in it.

According to lenz's law, induced emf always oppose the change in magnetic flux.so when south pole of bar magnet is opposed by magnetic field induced by the coil.i.e.,to repul the south pole towards the coil, it develop south pole due to clock wise induced current flow.

3)zero

4)moment mid point of bar magent at the coil effected by both north pole and south pole equally in opposite directions.so induced emf in coil become zero

when magnet cross the mid point north pole move away from the coil again causes to develop induce emf in the coil.

5)the current passing from left to right in long wire which is placed in magnetic field.

according to ampere rule, magnetic field induced around it.i.e.,south pole (clock wise dirction)

it repuled by magnet, that means magnet consists south pole (same pole repul each other)

so north pole of magnet exist other side(bottom).
