Question

The bulbs in the circuit shown are identical. Switch S initially closed. Rank the bulbs in order of brightness from dimmest to brightest. Indicate which bulbs are the same brightness. Give a specific reason for your choice of brightest blub. The switch S is then opened. Does the brightness of blub A increase, decrease or stay the same? Does the voltage drop across bulb A increase, decrease or stay the same? Explain your answer. Does the voltage drop across bulb D increase, decrease or stay the same? Explain your answer.

Explanation / Answer

a) when switch S is closed Current through A and E would be same and maximum. since P=I*I/R ans R is same for all byulbs. So ! and E would be brightest . Now Current through A would be divided across D anf BC. Since equivalent resistance of Bc is more than D so more current would pass through D so d will come next followed by B and c .

b) answer explained in a)

c)when switch S is opened B anc C will not come to play and only D would be there. The Eqv resistance of BCD would be lesser than D . So now less current would pass through A and brightness will decrease.

d) voltage drop would decrease as less current would pass through.
