Question

Determine both the magnitude and direction of the translational angular momentum of the particle at location O relative to each point: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H. The magnitude of the momentum p = 80 kg·m/s, and the distances are h = 9 m, b = 6 m, and w = 8 m. Assume the usual coordinate system (+x to the right, +y up, and+z out of the page, toward you.)

-z,+z, and none(zero magnitude) are the only directions to choose from. The picture is just to show you the directions, I haven't tried them/submitted anything, so I need those ones as well.

Explanation / Answer

angular momentum can be optained by cross product of P and R

for LA:
magnitude = P*b = 80*6 = 480 Kgm^2/s
direction:
put your index finger of right hand in direction of P
middle finger in direction of r (here towards A)
thumb gives the direction of L
direction : -Z

for LB:
magnitude = P*sqrt(b^2+w^2) = 80*(6^2+8^2) = 800 Kgm^2/s
direction : -Z

for Lc:
magnitude = 0
direction none:

for LD:
magnitude = P*sqrt(h^2+w^2) = 80*(9^2+8^2) = 963.3 Kgm^2/s
direction : +Z
