Question 8 Webassign 7 .Please Explain how to do thoroughly. Please type do not hand write.

Find the following. (In the figure, use C_1 = 37.00 muF and C_2 = 31.00 muF.) (a) the equivalent capacitance of the capacitors in the figure above (b) the charge on each capacitor on the right 37.00-muF capacitor on the left 37.00-muF capacitor on the 31.00-muF capacitor on the 6.00-muF capacitor (c) the potential difference across each capacitor on the right 37.00-muF capacitor on the left 37.00-muF capacitor on the 31.00-muF capacitor on the 6.00-muF capacitor

Explanation / Answer

6 uF and C2 are in parallel and their parallel combination is given as

Cp = 6 + C2 = 6 + 31 = 37 uF

C1 , Cp and C3 are in series and total capacitance is given as

1/Ctotal = 1/C1 + 1/Cp + 1/C3 = 1/37 + 1/37 + 1/37

Ctotal = 12.33 uF

b)

V = 9 volts

on the right 37 uF = Q1 = Qtotal = Ctotal V = 12.33 x 9 = 110.97 uC

V1 = Voltage across left and right 37 uF = Q1/37 = 110.97 / 37 = 3 volts

on the left 37 uF = Q1 = Qtotal = Ctotal V = 12.33 x 9 = 110.97 uC

V2 = voltage across C2 = V - 2 V1 = 9 - 3 - 3 = 3 volts

Q2 = C2 V2 = 31 x 3 = 93 uC

charge across 6 uF = Qtotal - Q2 = 110.97 - 93 = 17.97 uC

c)

V1 = Voltage across left and right 37 uF = Q1/37 = 110.97 / 37 = 3 volts

V2 = voltage across C2 = V - 2 V1 = 9 - 3 - 3 = 3 volts
