Question

B. Suppose that you placed your finger behind the paper (as shown at right) while trying to locate the piece of paper

Predict whether your finger would appear to be located to the left of, to the right of, or in line with the piece of paper if: you moved your head to the left. you moved your head to the right.

Suppose that you had placed your finger in front of the piece of paper rather than behind it. Predict whether the paper or your finger would appear on the left when you move your head to the left.

Devise a method based on your results by which you could locate the piece of paper. Your method should include how to tell whether your finger is directly over the piece of paper and, if not, whether it is in front of or behind the piece of paper. Describe your method to your partner, then test your method. You will be using this method repeatedly. Write down a clear set of instructions that you can refer to during this lab and the next. We will refer to the method for locating the piece of paper as the method of parallax.

Explanation / Answer

The methodology can be described as follows:

"1. Get at eye level with the table and close one eye. 2. Have your partner place the wad of paper somewhere visible on the table. 3. Align your eye, finger, and the wad, with your finger hovering about 1 inch above the table. 4. Move your head to the right, keeping your finger in place. If your finger is to the left of the wad, move it back until it lines up with the wad and your eyes. If your finger is to the right of the wad, move it forward. 5. Lower your finger onto the wad."

We you rotate you head to the right the finger appears to be on the left and vice versa, this situation changes when your finger is in front of the paper
