Question

Island B

The island has a rocky shoreline. Numerous tide pools dot the island along the shore where the wave action is somewhat sheltered by rock outcrops. The tide pools host barnacles, abalone, sea urchins and crabs. Algae grow all around the island; however, it is quite sparse in the tide pools where the rat likes to feed, but the rats’ meal is not what you think. The current is quite strong along the rocky outcrops where the algae grow best. Fresh water is available all year. The rat has a predator that visits the island regularly.

What are some adaptations the rat has achieved to survive on Island B?

Explanation / Answer

The rat might develop curved claws and long toes which help them to walk the slimy and rocky shoreline. They might develop webbed feet and thicker and longer tail to swim longer distances in an aquatic environment. As the island is filled with water, the rat might have to spend most of its time swimming in it so It can develop large lung capacity which can help in diving. As there is absence of the traditional carbohydrate source the size of the rat might get reduced. It might have waterproof fur which is more oily and thicker to provide warmth and buoyancy while swimming.
