Question

A worker pushing a 35.0-kg wooden crate at a constant speed for 13.5 m along a wood floor does 400 J of work by applying a constant horizontal force of magnitude F on the crate.

(a) Determine the value of F.
N
(b) If the worker now applies a force greater than F, describe the subsequent motion of the crate.

The crate would slow and come to rest.The crate's speed would remain constant over time.    The crate's speed would increase with time.

(c) Describe what would happen to the crate if the applied force is less than F.

The crate would slow and come to rest.The crate's speed would increase with time.    The crate's speed would remain constant over time.

Explanation / Answer

Part A

work done = force x displacement

400= F x 13.5

F = 400/13.5

F = 29.62 N

Part B

If force is more then the applied force then crate starts to accelerate and its speed start increasing.The crate's speed would increase with time.

Part C

If applied force is less than F , crate starts retarding and comes to a stop.The crate would slow and come to rest.
