Question

The drawing shows three situations in which a block is attached to a spring. The position labeled “0 m” represents the unstrained position of the spring. The block is moved from an initial position x0 to a final position xf, the magnitude of the displacement being denoted by the symbol s. Suppose the spring has a spring constant of k = 66 N/m. Using the data provided in the drawing, determine the total work done by the restoring force of the spring for each situation. In the case of zero put your result as "+0".

Explanation / Answer

The figure is not provided so using a figure from one other similar question. The link is below:

The work done by an spring force is given by the following formula:

W = (1/2).K.(xi2 - xf2)

a) In this case xi = 1m and xf = 3m

the work done in this case will be , W = 0.5*66*(12-32) = -264 J.

b) In this case xi = -3m and xf = 1m

the work done will be , W = 0.5 * 66 * (32-12) = +264 J

c) In this case xi = -3 and xf = +3m

Then work done will be , W = 0.5*66*(32-32) = +0 J
