BIO 620: TEST 1 Name 5) (2.5 points) For the following drugs circle the eicosanoids that will have their levels reduced. PLA2 inhibitor (leukotrienes, prostaglandins, prostacyclins, thromboxanes) LOX inhibitor (leukotrienes, prostaglandins, prostacyclins, thromboxanes) COX inhibitor (leukotrienes, prostaglandins, prostacyclins, diromboxanes) Aspirin Steroids (leukotrienes, prostaglandins, prostacyclins, thromboxanes) (leukotrienes, prostaglandins, prostacyclins, thromboxanes) 6) (1.5 points) You have noticed that an endocrine gland cell only releases its hormone contents after an increase in intracellular Ca. Do you anticipate that this hormone is hydrophobic or hydrophilic? What are two possible chemical types for this hormone? 7) (2 points) If you found that the lysosome no longer functioned in the follicle cells of the thyroid what would you anticipate would happen to the circulating thyronine hormone levels? (1 point for direction of change, 1 point for reason) ecreose esoud dec 8) (2 points) You have discovered that people who cannot resist feeding stray cats emit a compound (Suckero) that can be detected by cats and acts as an attractant. This compound would be an example of a pheromone, allomone or kairomone and why?Explanation / Answer
5.
a. Phospholipase A2 i.e. PLA2 act on membrane phospholipids, majorly arachidonic acid which directly affects LOX and COX so leukotriens, prostaglandins and thromboxane will have their level reduced as mentioned below.
b. LOX means lipoxygenase enzyme produce leukotriens,so in the presence of LOX inhibitor, leukotriens will have their level reduced.
c. COX means cyclooxygenase enzyme produce prostaglandins and thromboxane, so in the presence of COX inhibitor, prostaglandins and thromboxane will have their level reduced.
d. Aspirin inhibits COX so prostaglandins and thromboxane will have their level reduced as mentioned above.
e. Steroids inhibit all four eicosanoids.
6. Paratharmones or harmones secreted by parathyroid gland controls the serum calcium level and they are lipophilic or hydrophobic in nature.
Two possible chemical types are- calcitonin and insulin are chemical types of paratharmone as they are also proteinaceous in nature.
7. If lysosome does not work, thyronin level will decrease because the lysosomal proteases hydrolyse the thyroglobin and release free thyroid hormone .
8. This is a example of kairomone because it benifits the receiver i.e. cat by acting as attractant and gives disadvantage to producer.
