Question

incident ray of white light An incident ray of white light in air (medium 1) k refracted by a 3-cm thick slab of glass ( medium 2). Underneath this slab of glass is a mirror that reflects the refracted light. The sketch above depicts the path of the light for a single frequency (color). The angle of incidence for the white light is theta 1 = 45 degree, and the index of retraction for red light is n1 = 1.52 and for blue light is n2 = 1.53. What are the angles theta 2 in degrees for the red and blue light ray?

Explanation / Answer

THe light ray incidents on the mirror, with an angle equal to the angle of refraction at the first surface. From law of reflection the angle of reflection is same as that of the angle of incidence.

After reflection the light is traveling in the same medium and hence follows stright path and incidents at an angle same as that of the reflected angle.

After refraction, the light ray emerges out with the same incident angle.

Since the light traveling with in the medium twice before emerging, refractive indicies of the colors does not effect the angle and hence

45 degrees and 45 degrees is the answer
