Question

Question being investigated: Does Euglena prefer a light or dark environment? Hypothesis (your best guess at an answer): (I mark) Euglena would prefer a light environment because the light can provide the energy for them to growing. Prediction (a statement of what you should observe if your hypothesis is correct - what you wil be testing -your prediction should be clear and specific in its predicted results): Based on your hypothesis, your prediction is... 2 marks) If the number of Euglena in the light part is larger than the number of Euglena in the dark part, then the Euglena is preferring the light environment. Explanation / Answer

Does Euglena prefer a light or dark environment?

Hypothesis

Euglena prefers a light environment as its primary metabolism is through photosynthesis which requires light and it helps in providing it energy for growth.

Prediction

It was found that the Euglena present in the dark condition tend to gradually move to light regions for hunting smaller animals or plants. They will randomly move towards light areas for its continued growth and development.

Experiment Design

In this experience, the Euglene was kept both in light and dark conditions for a week to find out the result. The Euglene that was kept in the light condition were able to synthesize light through the chlorophyll, produce energy and were able to grow in size. In case of the Euglena that was kept in dark, it was found that they had no energy reserve and eventually were not able to grow. The Euglena kept in dark was shifted to light and was found that growth was observed with no time.

Independent Variable

The light is the independent variable which is manipulated during this experiment.

Dependent Variable

The Euglena is the dependent variable which is able to respond to the changes made in the experiment

Standardized Variables

The standardized variable are the growth conditions like temperature which remain constant during the experiment

Control Treatment

Euglena growing under proper light condition is the control we will use for this experiment
