Questions 1. If you were to only use your images (not the dichotomous key), how would you be able to differentiate 2. I How and why is quorum sensing involved in the division of labor by volvocines? Find a scientific paper 3. In the Volvox, what is the advantage gained by producing somatic cells that are incapable of reproduction? between the different volvocales? Cell types? [Base this answer from your observations of the different volvocines.] hat shows this phenomenon in volvocines and explain one figure in the paper that appropriately illustrates the point. Find a scientific paper about the Volvox, summarize the study, and explain a figure in the paper that depicts your answerExplanation / Answer
1. Volvocales are a type of green algae, usually staying in fresh water which may appear in single or in colonies, but when they appear in colonies they have a fixed number of cells. The Volvocales could be differentiated on the basis of different number of cells forming the colonies, i.e some colony may have few cells and others could have many cells in the colony e.g in the Volvox genera, there could be 500 cells in the colony. Volvocales could also be distinguished on the shape of the colonies i.e whether spherical or planar.
2. Quoram sensing is the process of detecting and responding when there is a certain cell population. This responding could be where to move, where to find food and the mechanisms of other life processes. As, the Volvocales move in a population, sometimes which is dense, Quoram sensing is required for communication and taking important decisions. In the Volvocales, this could be done by flagella (Reference- Martin B Short et al, 2006). One example, from this paper could be that to swim in a fixed direction by the organism (Volvox) quoram sensing in between the cells is needed.
3. The somatic cells are incapable of reproduction but help in the movement of the organism. Reference- David L. Kirk, 2001.
