Question

A converging lens and a diverging lens are placed as shown, 12 cm apart. The converging lens is located at the origin. An object is located at -50 cm.

Where along the priciple axis is the location of the imagine formed by only the first lens?

Where is the location of the final image due to both lenses? Give your answer along the principle axis show with the origin at the converging lens.

Explanation / Answer

a) For the first lens:

1/s+1/s'=1/f

1/50+1/s' = 1/20

s' = 33.3 cm to the right of the first lens so:

x = +33.3 cm

b) In this case the position for the objet for lens 2(imagen formed by lens 1) is

S = 33.3-12= 21.3 cm

we use:

1/S+1/S' = 1/F

1/21.3+1/S'=1/-10

S' = -6.81 cm it means 6.81 cm to the right of the second lens

so the position is:

X = 12+6.81 = 18.81 cm but this is not an choice
