Question

A balloon is filled with hot air of density 1.05 kg/m^3. When unfilled, the balloon has a mass of 0.0870 kg. When filled, it has a volume of 0.810 m^3. The surrounding air has a density of 1.23 kg/m^3. What is the buoyant force of air on the balloon when filled?

________N

What is the force of gravity on the full balloon including the hot air inside it, when the balloon is filled?

____________ N

If the full balloon is tied to the ground by a string, what is the tension in the string?

__________ N

What would the tension in the string be if the balloon were filled with helium (density = 0.176 kg/m^3)?

___________N

Explanation / Answer

a)
Buoyant force =volume of balloon * density of surrounding air * g
                            = 0.810 * 1.23 * 9.8
                            = 9.76 N
b)
mass of hot air = density of hot air* volume of balloon
                            = 1.05*0.810
                            =0.8505 Kg
Mass of empty balloon = 0.087 Kg
Force of gravity = total mass * g
                             = (0.8505 + 0.087)*9.8
                             = 9.19 N
c)
T = Buoyant force - force of gravity
    = 9.76 - 9.19
    = 0.57 N
d)
Buoyant force =volume of balloon * density of surrounding air * g
                            = 0.810 * 1.23 * 9.8
                            = 9.76 N

mass of hot air = density of hot air* volume of balloon
                            = 0.176*0.810
                            =0.143 Kg
Mass of empty balloon = 0.087 Kg
Force of gravity = total mass * g
                             = (0.143 + 0.087)*9.8
                             = 2.25 N
T = Buoyant force - force of gravity
    = 9.76 - 2.25
    = 7.51 N
