Question
A bowl of water has a flat base of area A = 18.7 cm2 and rests on a table. The height of the water is h = 10.6 cm, the weight of the water is 5.00 N, and the weight of the bowl is negligible (see figure below).
(a) Find the force exerted on the base of the bowl by the water in contact with it. (Consider the water directly above the base of the bowl.)
(b) Find the force exerted on the base of the bowl by the surface of the table.
(c) If the base of the bowl is in equilibrium, why are the answers to (a) and (b) not the same?
Explanation / Answer
here ,
area of base , A = 18.7 cm^2
height , h = 10.6 cm = 0.106 m
part a)
Force = pressure * area
Force = (1.01 *10^5 + 1000 * 9.8 * 0.106) * 18.7 *10^-4
Force = 190.81 N
the force exerted on the base of the bowl by the water in contact is 190.81 N
part b)
for the surface of the bowl
force exerted on the table = 5 N
part c)
as the force is exerted on the curved part of the bowl by water and air ,
hence , the answers in part 1 and 2 are not equal
