Question

6. (6 points) In the U-tube diagram below, the membrane is permeable to solute A: however. it is NOT permeable to solute Z What is going to happen to solute A (both direction and percentages)? a. Side 1 Side 2 | 6% A What is going to happen to solute Z (both direction and percentages)? 20% A 10% Z b. What is going to happen to the water levels, specifically (i.e., rise in which side and lower in which side, stay the same, etc.)? c. 7. (4 points) Name two ways that active transport is different from passive transport.

Explanation / Answer

a. Since solute A is permeable to the semi-permeable membrane, so the transportation of solute will be due to the concentration gradient. Side 1 has 20% of A and side 2 has 6% of A. So in order to maintain equilibrium 7% of A from side 1 will move to side 2.

20 – 7 = 6 + 7

14% = 14%

Side 1 = Side 2

b. Since the solute Z is not permeable to membrane, therefore solute Z will not move on either side, but due to high concentration of solute Z in side 2, so due to osmosis water will move from side 1 to side to, means from side of low concentration to high concentration side in order to maintain equal concentration.

c. The concentration of solute Z is high in side 2, so due to osmosis, water will move from side 1 to side to and the level of water will decrease in side 1 and increase in side 2.

d. Active transport requires energy for the transport of solute from one side to other side while passive transports do not require any energy for the transportation. Active transport is not dependent on the concentration gradient and transportation can be possible on either side of the concentration gradient, while passive transport depends upon the concentration gradient and the solute or solution move depends upon the concentration of the solute on either side.
