Question 1)
Two billiard balls of equal mass collide in the following manner. What is the final velocity of ball B, and what is the speed and direction of ball A as it recoils?
Question 2)
Two balls collide in a totally inelastic collision. The first ball has twice the mass of the second. The first ball has velocity v (to the right), and the second has velocity ?v (to the left). What is the final velocity of the two balls after they collide? What was the % change in kinetic energy?
It's a homework problem worth 20 points and I'm not sure if my answer is correct. I said that both would have the same velocity because they are inelastic so i put m(v)+2m(-v)/2m*m= v3 but its probably wrong >.< and i have no idea how to find the % change in kinetic energy.
Please help!! Its urgent!!
0 B +x 0 UB = 3.7 m/s = 2.0 m/s AExplanation / Answer
mlet m be tne mass of second ba
momentum along y axis = mvy = 2*2 m = 4 m kgm./s
momentum aomg x axis = Mvy = 3.7 m/s
net Momoentum P^2 = Px^2 + Py^2
P^2 = (4m)^2 + (3.7m)^2
Pfinal = 5.44 m
Final Velocity Vf = 5.44 m/(2m+m) = 1.816 m/s^2
---------------------------
part B :
KE i of A = 0.5 * m * 2^2 = 2 m
KE of i of B = 0.5* 2m * 3.7^2 = 13.69 m
KE t i = 2+ 13.69 = 15.69 m Joues
KE f = 0.5(m +2m) * 1.816^2
KEf = 4.94 m Joules
so Fractional Change of KE = KEf - Kei/)KEi
% KE change = (4.94 - 15.59)/(15.69)
= 67.8%
