Question
Consider a light ray incident upon a thin Plano-convex lens. This ray is parallel to the axis of the lens. The lens has an index of refraction of 1.3 and the convex side has a radius of 103 mm. After passing through the lens the ray will stay parallel to the axis, but will be shifted slightly towards the axis. the ray will diverge and seem to come from a point on the axis 12.9 cm in front of the lens. the ray will cross the axis 34.3 cm beyond the lens. the ray will stay parallel to the axis, but will be shifted slightly away from the axis. the ray will diverge and seem to come from a point on the axis 34.3 cm in front of the lens. the ray will cross the axis 12.9 cm beyond the lens.Explanation / Answer
use the lens maker equation through the lens as
1/f = (n-1)* (1/R1 - 1/R2)
here R1 = 0.103 m
R2 for plane lens = infinity
so
1/f = (1.3 -1)*(1/0.103)
f = 0.343 m or 34.3 cm
so for this the answer is option 3, the ray will cross the axis 34.3 cm beynd the lens
