Question

Att = 0, the instantaneous position of two pulses moving along a taut string with a speed v = 1.54 cm/s are as shown in the diagram below. Each unit on the horizontal axis is 5.0 cm and each unit on the vertical axis is 4.0 cm.

(a) At what location and time will the midpoint of pulse 1 coincide with the leading edge of pulse 2?

location:______cm

time:________s

(b) What is the y-value of the resultant wave at the time and location determined in part (a)?

_______cm

(c) At what location and time will the midpoint of pulse 1 coincide with the midpoint of pulse 2?

location:_______cm

time_____ sec

(d) What is the y-value of the resultant wave at the time and location determined in part (c)?

____ cm

Explanation / Answer

A) since both the waves are approaching with the same speed v then

they will meet at the mid point between them i.e at the 7*5 = 35 cm = 0.35 m

time taken is t = distance/speed = 3*5 /1.54 = 9.74 s
B) y-vlaue of the resultant wave is 0 cm

C) at the location x = 35+2.5 = 27.5 cm

time t = (15+2.5)/1.54 = 11.36 s

D) y = 0 cm
