Question

(b) What force is exerted by the water on the window of an underwater vehicle at this depth if the window is circular and has a diameter of 30.4 cm?
__________N

(a) Calculate the absolute pressure at the bottom of a freshwater lake at a point whose depth is 29.5 m. Assume the density of the water is 1.00 x 103 kg/m3 and the air above is at a pressure of 101.3 kPa (b) What force is exerted by the water on the window of an underwater vehicle at this depth if the window is circular and has a diameter of 30.4 cm?

Explanation / Answer

Here ,

a) depth , d = 29.5 m

density of water , p = 1 *10^3 Kg/m^3

Po = 101.3 kPa = 101.3 *10^3 Pa

at the botton of the lake ,

P = Po + p * g * d

P = 1.01 *10^5 + 1000 * 9.8 * 29.5

P = 3.904 *10^5 Pa

the absolute pressure at the bottom lake is 3.904 *10^5 Pa

part b)

force on the window

FOrce on window = P * area

FOrce on window = 3.904 *10^5 * pi * (0.304/2)^2

FOrce on window = 28331 N

the force is exerted by the water on window is 28331 N
