Question

5.) A cylinder that is 20 cm tall is filled with water. If a hole is made in the side of the cylinder 5 cm below the top level, how far will the stream land from the base of the cylinder? Assume that the cylinder is large enough so that the level of the water in the cylinder does not drop significantly. 5.) A cylinder that is 20 cm tall is filled with water. Torricelli's Law

the horizontal velocity of the exiting water stream, v = sqrt(2gh)

so v = sqrt[(2)(9.8 m/s²)(0.05 m)] = 0.99 m/s

The water stream has an initial vertical velocity of zero, it is as if it were dropped from a height of 0.15 m to fall to the ground. The time it takes an object (drop of water) to hit the ground when dropped from height, h, is t = sqrt(2h/g) so it takes our water t = sqrt(2*.15/9.8) = 0.17496 seconds to reach the ground.

In that same time, it will travel horizontally a distance of d = vt or (.99)*(.17496) = 0.1732 m
= about 17 cm
