Question

A 196-V battery, an inductor, and a resistor are connected in series as shown in the diagram below. A two-way switch makes it possible to include or exclude the battery. The switch that had been in position 1 for a long time is suddenly moved to position 2.

(a) What is the potential difference across the resistor at the end of four time constants?

Answer: 3.59 V

(b) At this time, what is the potential difference across the inductor?

(this is the part i can't figure out, it's not 192.41 V like i thought it would be...

Explanation / Answer

a) after long time current through inductor = 196 / R

after switching to switch 2.

i(t) = I0 ( e ^ - (t/T))

when t = 4T

i = (192/R) ( e^ - 4) = 3.52 / R

PD across Resistor = i R   = 3.52 Volt

b) PD across inductor = 192 - 3.52 = 188.48 Volt
