Question
You are performing an analysis of a new metalic alloy created in your research lab. You place a 24.0 kg block of this new metal initially at a temperature 16 oC in a rigid insulated box. 0.15 kg of steam at 100 oC is piped into the box and then the box is sealed so that no heat can be transfered in or out. When the system comes to equilibrium, the temperature is 75 oC. What is the specific heat of the metal? Give your answer in J/(kg oC) (or equivalently J/(kg K)), and give your answer to at least 3 significant digits.
Explanation / Answer
This is based on principle of calorimetry
Heat lost by the hot system(steam)=Heat gained by the cool system
Heat lost by the steam =mL+mS(100-75) =(0.15)(540)(4.2)(10)3 +(0.15)(1)(4.2)(10)3(100-75)=340.2(10)3 +15.75(10)3
=355.95(10)3 J
Heat gained by the block =mS(75-16)=24(S)(59) =1416(S)
So 355.95(10)3 = 1416(S) S=0.251(10)3 J/kgK =0.25(10)3 J/kgK
