Question

You are designing a hydraulic lift for an automobile garage. It will consist of two oil-filled cylindrical pipes of different diameters. A worker pushes down on a piston at one end, raising the car on a platform at the other end. (See the figure (Figure 1) .) To handle a full range of jobs, you must be able to lift cars up to 4000 kg , plus the 400 kg platform on which they are parked. To avoid injury to your workers, the maximum amount of force a worker should need to exert is 100 N .

1. What should be the diameter of the pipe under the platform?

Explanation / Answer

P1 = P2

F/pi*r1^2 = W/pi*r2^2

F = 100

r1 = 25/2 cm

W = 4400*9.8 = 43120 N

r2 = d/2

100/(25/2)^2 = 43120/(d/2)^2

d = 519 cm

--------

2)

mechanical advantage = F/W = h2/h1

100/43120 = h2/60

h2 = 0.139 cm
