Question
Exercise 3.38
An airplane pilot wishes to fly due west. A wind of 90.0 km/h is blowing toward the south.
Part A
If the airspeed of the plane (its speed in still air) is 360.0 km/h , in which direction should the pilot head?
Express your answer as an angle measured north of west.

Explanation / Answer
PART A
The aircraft ends up doing its 360kph. "along the hypotenuse" of a right triangle. It has to turn towards the north to counter the wind.
Angle = arcsin (90/360) = 14.47 degrees north of west.
PART B
Vmax= Vwest + Vwind(south) (this is a vector equation)
Then Vwest=sqrt( (Vmax )^2 - (Vwind(south)) ^2)
Speed over ground = sqrt. (360^2 - 90^2) = 348.56kph
