Question
Work and Power in Stair Sprinting
Each student will perform a sprint up the staircase in the Special Events Center. Measure the height of one step (the height should be the same for each), and count how many steps there are in the staircase. The height of the steps is 17 CENTIMETERS and the re were 18 STEPS. Each sprint must be timed to the nearest 100th second. Each student should perform more than one trial; use the best time for the assignment below. Each student is to calculate his/her own work performed in joules and power output in watts. Show all formulae used and calculations performed. Compare results to at least one other student in your group. Explain any similarities or differences between work and power values.Explanation / Answer
The height of the staircase, h = 17cm*18 steps = 306cm = 3.06m
Let m be the mass of the student in Kg. You will have to substitute with your own mass.
Then work done , w = Force* distance = mg*h = mg*3.06 Here g is the acceleration due to gravity = 9.81m/s^2.
Power = work done / time taken = mg*3.06/4.26 W
