Question

What are the correct answers to this page of questions?

23. If the structure labeled (D) is identified as a lysosome, which of the following statements is correct? The cell shown is more likely to be an animal cell than a plant cell. Enzymes active within the lysosome are likely to be less functional if they were found in the cytoplasm. B. AC. The structure labeled (D) is a component of the endomembrane system D. E, (A) and (C) (A), (B), and (C) The following figure depicts a protein that is a component of a biological membrane. Use the figure to answer the next two (2) questions 24. Identify the incorrect statement about the protein shown. The protein would be classified as an integral membrane protein. The amino acid at the position labeled (A) is more likely to be leucine than lysine. The region of the protein labeled (B) can be conclusively identified as facing the extracellular space All of the above statements about the protein shown are incorrect None of the above statements about the protein shown are incorrect. A. B. C. (E) 25. True or False: The protein's likely cellular role is to allow for the transport of ions from one side of the membrane to the other side. A. True B) False 12

Explanation / Answer

23. c.

Lysosomes are the cellular organelles present in both plant and animal cells. So after seeing a lysosome, it is difficult to ascertain whether a cell is an animal cell or the plant cell.

All the enzymes of lysosomes if moved to the cytoplasm, can eat out the other organelles as well suggesting that they are as active in the cytoplasm as in lysosome.

This is true that lysosomes form the part of the endomembrane system.

24.e. None of the statements are incorrect.

This protein is an integral membrane protein as it is permanently attached to the biological membrane.

The amino acid labelled A is placed in the interior of the membrane hence it should be hydrophobic (inner side of the membrane is made up of hydrophobic fatty acid tails)which could be leucine as it is a non-polar hydrophobic residue whereas lysine is a positively charged amino acid and it should be placed towards the outer side of the membrane which is made up of hydrophilic phosphate heads.

The region facing B is the extracellular side of the membrane.

25.true

Integral membrane proteins enable ions and large polar molecules to pass through the membrane by passive or active transport.

Proteins have several functions and the above function is one of them.
