Question

A single loop of wire is connected to an ammeter. The ammeter reports a positive number when the current runs through the loop in the clockwise direction (as viewed from the top). When a bar magnet of unknown polarity is initially placed above the loop as pictured, and then rotated 180 degrees clockwise when viewed from the side, the ammeter reports a peak current of -2.4 Mu A. Which end of the magnet is its north pole Give a thorough explanation for how this is determined. If the magnet is rotated at the same speed, but counter-clockwise (when viewed from the side) instead, will the ammeter report a positive current, negative current, or zero current Explain your answer. If the magnet is moved toward the loop instead of rotated, will the ammeter report a positive current, negative current, or zero current Explain your answer. If the magnet is moved away from the loop instead of rotated, will the ammeter report a positive current, negative current, or zero current? Explain your answer.

Explanation / Answer

a) Current flowing through the loop produces magnetic field around the loop. When current flows in the clockwise direction magnet will get deflected towards the east direction.Therfore ,the upper end of the magnet must be south pole.

b) If the magnet is rotated in anticlock-wise direction ,the ammeter will report negative value again. When current flows in clockwise direction, magnet will deflect towards east and if current is flowing in anticlockwise direction , the magnet will deflect towards west.

c) If he magnet is moved towards the loop, the value of the current is totaly dependent on the polarity of the magnet. Current will be positive if south pole is moving towards it and vise-versa.

d)if the magnet is moved away from the loop, again the values of the current will depend on the polarity of the magnet.
