Question
A model airplane has a small gas powered motor in it to allow it to fly. It is tethered its controller by a long cord. The plane will fly in a circle at the end of this cord around the controller who uses the tether to control the altitude of flight of the plane. Currently the plane is flying in level flight while the cord makes an angle above the horizontal. The plane's speed is 13.0m/s and its mass is 1.25kg. The cord is 10.0 meters long.
a) What is the tension of the cord?
b) What is the angle the cord makes with the horizontal?
c) What is the amount of lift the wings are providing to the plane?
Explanation / Answer
the airplane will exert a centripetal force on the string which will be equal to tension assuming the string is inelastic.
Centripetal force= mass X velocity^2/ radius
in this case radius is the length of string.
F=(1.25X13^2)/2
the angle and amount of lift cannot be calculated since data is not sufficient.
to calculate the acceleration we will have to compare 2 scenarios wherein inital angle has to be know and the airplane wing dimensions are to be know. so sorry on that front
Centripetal force =Tension = 105.62N.
